John Sanderson

Where do I find
the money?

John is a strategy consultant, financier and company director, and a founder-director of Whetstone Group. He began his career working in the City in equity analysis in the leisure sector for Fielding Newson-Smith (latterly County NatWest) becoming a well-known and highly rated specialist in media stocks.

He then joined the SRU Group as a director of Hydra Associates – the media sector specialist strategy and business development consultancy which SRU had set up. He served as a non-executive director of SRU before its sale to Brunswick Group.

Since then, consulting clients have included Sporting Index, Five, The Football League, United Business Media, The Race Course Association, Close Brothers, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Boosey & Hawkes, Endemol UK, Vulcan Ventures, The Mill and the media team at Brunswick Group, the leading City communications adviser.

As part of his business development portfolio John sits on a variety of boards including the leading radio production independent Something Else Sounds Directions, the leading job-board aggregator Workcirle and a challenger to the regional newspapers for classified advertising – essentially new business models exploiting digital media opportunities to challenge older ones.

Where formal fund-raising and transaction assignments are involved, John works through Enterprise Corporate Finance, where he is registered with the Financial Services Authority. He has served as a member of the London Regional Council of the CBI where he is an adviser to the Creative Capital Fund and to the Big Issue Invest Social Enterprise Investment Fund currently being raised to invest in enterprises with strong social benefits. He is also a board member of the holding company of The North East Creative Content Fund.

John is a trustee of the charity Pilotlight, which enables its membership to assist a range of charities for the disadvantaged, and an Ambassador for the charity Merlin, which takes medical aid to emergencies wherever they occur.

He has a degree in Modern Languages from Oxford University.
